Innovation
Can a food, retail or traditional business get Innovator Founder endorsement?
Many founders come to the route with a business they love and know well: a food brand, a shop, a hand-made product. These are real businesses. The difficulty is that the Innovator Founder route asks a different question from "is this a good business?"

Why traditional businesses find the innovation test hard
Endorsing bodies are asked whether a business is innovative, viable and scalable. A bakery, café or cosmetics brand can be viable and even scalable, but if UK customers can already buy something similar, the assessor will struggle to call it innovative. Quality, passion and premium positioning are not the same as innovation.
Where real innovation can come from
- The product: a new ingredient, formulation or use that is not already sold in the UK
- The process: a production method that is meaningfully cheaper, cleaner or more sustainable, with evidence
- The model: a new way of reaching or serving customers that competitors do not offer
- Intellectual property: something you own and others cannot easily copy
Test your idea honestly
Search for UK businesses that already do what you plan to do. If you find several, write down exactly what makes yours different. If the only answer is "we do it better", the innovation case needs work before you write a business plan.
Location and sustainability can help a story, but on their own they rarely carry the innovation test. They are strongest when they enable something competitors cannot do.
Viability still matters
Food and physical-product businesses have real costs: premises, equipment, licences, food-safety rules and stock. Your financial plan has to show these clearly and show you can fund them. A thin cost model is one of the quickest ways to lose credibility.
Common questions
- Can a café or restaurant get Innovator Founder endorsement?
- It is difficult. A standard café or restaurant is usually judged as not innovative. It needs something genuinely new to the UK market, such as a new product, process or model, backed by evidence.
- Does being sustainable count as innovative?
- Not on its own. Sustainability helps when it comes from a new process or product that competitors cannot easily copy, and you can show it.
- Should I change my idea if it is traditional?
- Not necessarily. First look for a real innovation inside it. If you cannot find one that holds up to scrutiny, it may be worth adapting the idea before applying.
